Brush tool cursor a crosshair and not painting

I originally had my brush tool working with one document very well. When I created another document and changed the resolution to 1200 dpi I had to save as a large document file. Now when I use my brush tool the cursor is a crosshair and doesn't paint anything in it's path. I'm new to Photoshop and would like to see if there's a quick answer to get me going. Thank you. I'll try going back to 300 dpi and saving as a psd just to see if that works. Thanks.

 

I really need the 1200 dpi if at all possible.

 

Also, the image needed to be rasterized before I used the brush tool.

There are a couple possible causes for your problem:

  • Crosshair does not appear on its own unless it is selected option in Preferences. You may have pressed Caps Lock. Press it again.
  • Your Brush blending mode may be set to something else beside Normal. Check in the options bar that blending mode is set to Normal.
  • Brush Opacity can be set to 0 or very low number.
  • Your layer to which you want to paint may be set to 0 Opacity or to blending mode other than Normal, use drop down list in the Layers panel to change blending mode back to Normal.

If you see a crosshair instead of the brush size you're Caps Lock key is probably pressed down. 

The other possibility is that you have a very small brush size and need to increase the size of the brush. 

You're right that the brush won't paint on a layer that is not rasterized. 

If the brush isn't painting it is possible that the layer is a smart object or that the layer is locked.
