Brush tool not working with layer mask

The brush tool does not work when the layer mask is on, but works otherwise. I have provided a screenshot - am I doing something wrong? Please help. Thanks!

You seem to be painting white on white.

Thanks so much!! Changed the colour and that did the trick!
