Brutally Slow

Just worked on an invitation for my godson's birthday party and it was brutally slow - like working with Photoshop in the 90s.  I was done and went into the Image Size to change my dimensions and it completely stalled.  I'm probably going to end up getting out of it and losing most of my work because I haven't done many saves.  What is going on????  Do I have to go back to the way things were where I save my work every two minutes???
