Question

calculating 'Location' on Gradient Map

Hi everyone,

Can you please tell me if there's a way to calculate Location for Gradient Map color swatch so it'd chime in with original color?

Here's an example:

I have three circles and a gradient map with mask so I can see half of the original layer, I manually placed three color swatches so that gradient mapped half would look the same as original layer,

but I don't get where this location comes from: it's not either lightness or brightness of the color. Is there a way to calculate it with script?

so that gradient mapped half would look the same as original layer,

But it does not.

What are you trying to achieve really?

But it does not.

I was concentrating on green color and also as I mentioned I was adjusting the location by hand so my manual gradient is indeed a little bit off.

Here's what I want to do exactly:

1) I have an image http://take.ms/p3ScB

2) I want to pick colors from there, in this example — black, green and yellow (save them in external file or panel, doesn't matter now)

3) and from these colors I'll make a gradient map in such way so the mapped image will concur with original colors http://take.ms/fwuaW

my problem is I can't find this location properly. I think it should relate to brightness somehow.

Do you understand what Gradient Map does?

In your example the formerly uni-coloured splotches have to assume different colors on their "fringes" because you are assigning certain colors to certain luminosities, so the bright green one ends up with a purplish edge for example.

In the image you linked to in your last post anti-aliased edges would result in the same problem.

I still fail to see what you are trying to achieve really.

What do you need the information in this form for?

If the shapes

• do not have anti-aliased edges Indexed Color should achieve a somewhat similar result

• and if they have anti-aliased edges the Gradient Map-approach seems sub-optimal.
