Camera Raw editing one layer, but keep background untouched?

Hi I am retouching a render with CR. I am trying to edit things (within CR), but I would like to preserve my solid background untouched.

So far I managed to either edit the layer I want, but no background (meaning the white-grey chessboard). I find it a little bit difficult to see what I am doing with no background. On the other hand I could bring my solid background+editing layer, but then of course I will have everything retouched.

Is there any possibility to retouch object in the render with CR, but preserving a "locked" solid color background ?

Thanks a lot.

I could upload images to clarify if needed ?

You could try this:

Add a temporary copy of the background as a layer immediately beneath the layer you are retouching.

Select both layers and make them into a single smart object

Use the camera raw filter on the smart object

Once done double click to open the SO and turn off visibility of the temporary "background" layer

Save and close the SO
