Question

camera raw filter won't open

I opened a raw photograph in photoshop and it opened in camera raw. I made some minor adjustments then opened the file. I made a duplicate layer and made some other adjustments. I then created another duplicate layer and tried to add a camera raw filter but it won't open up. How can I add another camera raw filter?

How can I add another camera raw filter?

By @MemoryWeaverFineArtPhotos

Rob explained it well, but just to be absolutely clear: It won't be another camera raw filter. These are two very different things and if you don't understand the difference it will lead to more frustration down the road.

A raw file can't be opened in Photoshop. It has to be processed into a standard RGB file first, and this is what the ACR plugin does.

Here's the confusing part: The ACR engine can also be used as a filter from Photoshop, once the file has already been processed into an RGB file. This uses only a small subset of the ACR processing pipeline. It allows you to use the ACR controls on a standard, already processed, RGB image.

These are two very different things, starting with very different data. The ACR filter is used just like any other filter in Photoshop. If you can apply any other Photoshop filter, you can also apply the ACR filter.

I understand whay you're saying. But for some reason, when I try to add more than one camera raw filter, the second time around the the filter just reapplies the changes i made with the first camera raw filter I used. Maybe it's a setting? Here is a step by step of what I did:

1. opened an ARW raw photo and it opens up in camera raw 14.2

2. made minor adjustments, clicked open, then image opens up in adobe photoshop 2022

3. created a duplicate layer called "background copy"

4. clicked filter, camera raw filter, then image changes with the same changes I made in the camera raw, so it's like the filter doubled

So it's like I can't use the camera raw filter in photoshop if I make changes in camera raw. Could it be a setting maybe?

You need to go down a bit in the menu. What you're clicking at the top of the menu is last filter used, and the the same settings are reapplied.

" I then created another duplicate layer and tried to add a camera raw filter but it won't open up. How can I add another camera raw filter?"

Can you describe steps taken to add another camera raw filter? Screenshot may also help.

TBMK There are two scenarios to your question-

1) If you [Open] the original image as a 'Smart Object' (from Bridge -[Open as Object].), then the background layer embeds the raw file to re-edit in ACR by a double-click on the Smart Object badge on the layer thumbnail.

2) If you [Open] the original image as a regular layer, and make new copy layers, then you no longer have access to ACR (with the RAW file).

You can select a regular layer and choose [Camera Raw Filter] which opens a window looking like ACR, but this "Filter" is now adjusting a raster RGB version of the image in Ps (not the RAW image data.)

Other experts can correct me if I am wrong in my understanding!
