Camera Raw Preferences - Graphics acceleration is disabled due to an error.

I have tried to enable using the graphics processor on the most two current versions of Photoshop under the Camera Raw Preferences as when I try to access Camera Raw via the Filter menu, I get an error message:  GPU Acceleration Required - Camera Raw requires graphics processor acceleration to edit photos.  I updated the drivers for my graphics card, then retarted my computer.  Photoshop sees the graphics card, but Camera Raw won't allow me to turn on the acceleration for it so I can't use Camera Raw within Photoshop.  Suggestions?

ACR has stricter GPU requirements than Photoshop, so it may well work in Photoshop but fail in ACR. It's correct that ACR now requires a working GPU to open at all.

The frst thing to do, since this is a laptop, is to completely disable the integrated GPU. Conflicting dual GPUs is a very common problem. See section 6&7 here:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html

Then update your driver.

There is a log file somewhere (can't recall where at the moment) that prevents ACR from opening if the driver crashed once. Deleting this file forces a new rescan of the GPU, and if the problem is resolved it will open again. Hopefully someone else can remember where that log file is -

Found an article and this part fixed the issue I was having:

Verify if GPU is causing Photoshop issues

Unsure if your graphics processor or driver is the cause of the issue you're facing with Photoshop? Disabling the GPU acceleration will help you narrow down the cause of the issue.

  1. Navigate to Edit > Preferences > Performance (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > Performance (macOS).
  2. Uncheck Use Graphics Processor
  3. Restart Photoshop.
