Can I make a keyboard shortcut to create a new layer with different blending modes?

I'm still learning Photoshop and I'm trying to set it up to minimize extra steps for things I often do. I use the multiply blending mode as often as the normal mode. I was wondering if there was a way to create an action or a keyboard shortcut that would allow me to create a new layer but have multiply automatically set as the blending mode. Is that possible and if so, how would I go about that?

Yes, you can set an action to create a new layer that has its blending mode set to Multiply. Here's how:

  1. In the Actions panel (Window > Actions), click the Create new action button or go to the Actions panel menu to New Action... to open the New Action dialog.
  2. In the New Action dialog, assign a Function Key and the Shift and/or Control (PC) or Command (macOS) modifiers and click Record.
  3. Go to Layer > New > Layer...
  4. In the New Layer dialog, set Mode to Multiply and click OK
  5. In the Actions panel, click the Stop Playing/Recording button at the bottom or go to the panel menu to Stop Recording.

Then whenever you want a new layer with the blending mode set to Multiply, you can do one of the following:

  • Use the function key combo that you set
  • Go to the Actions panel, select your action, and click the Play button at the bottom of the panel
  • Go to the Actions panel and while holding Control (PC) or Command (macOS), double-click on the action

You can create and action or a script to add an new layer and set the new layer blening mode to multiply.  Then set a shortcut to run the Script or a F key to play the action.
