Can not paste transparent png into image

I am using Photoshop CS2. This problem has been plaguing me since 2005, literaly. Whenever i download a png image with transparent background, i can not drop that png into my existing blank image (no layers). I am not talking about loosing transparency or turing background into black - i am talkign about basic physical inability to move/drop/ png iamge into blank image by using move tool.

Since all png files do ntop work how they are supposed to, i download a jpg alternativeand just remove the white/black background with magic wand tool and save it as a transparent png, which then works - but this is not an option for more complex stuff.

Is it a problem of Photoshop settings or are we simply living in a [removed by moderator] time where are the png files in the internet are deliberatelty locked and made so that you can not save their transparency? [cursing removed] is going on? This was not a problem back in the day.

Are you sure you are downloading a PNG with transparency? Many sites have such PNGs for download, but if you try and bypass the download and just move the preview you could be getting a jpeg or webp preview file (webp is unsupported in CS2). If you download it and store it on your drive, and confirm it is a png, can you open it in Photoshop using File > Open?

Can you give us a link to one of the problem png files?

What version of Windows are you using?

Can you provide a screenshot of  Photoshop CS2 with both the png and blank file showing?

If I am understanding you correctly, you can't always get away with pasting a PNG image with some transparency directly into a Photoshop image.  Best practice is to Place Embedded or open the PNG in photoshop, and move it to the destination window.  If you copy the PNG from a web site, for instance, and paste into a Photoshop project, you are likely to have any transparent areas show as black.

Not sure, I've never tested it, but my mind goes to the browser. Have you tried a different browser or a different type of browser, like a non-Chromium one?

In Photoshop CS2 if you have the Move Tool set to Auto Select Layer and the layer is locked, that could prevent you from dragging the png into another document.
