Can not use normal brush

I imported a pat file and then deselected it but when I use the pen tool It applies the effects of the pattern instead of the normal brush colour I have even deleted the pat file (in short: I do not think I know how to deselect pattern.)

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?

If you are making s Shape with the Pen, notice the fill in the Option Bar; it may be set for Pattern.
