I can see the changes I make in the small preview window top right corner but not on my work.

This has only just happened, I rely on select and mask for a large portion of my work and use this tool everyday.

Try resetting the select and mask workspace: use the dropdown in the upper right and choose Reset Select and Mask.

Try F to cycle your views or X Or "OK" to keep the changes, Cancel to remove them, then Restart your PC and Photoshop and see if the problem goes away.
