Can't apply colours using Layer Styles

I'm a beginner using Adobe Photoshop CS6. I was trying to use the glow effects of my letters, but it only appear in grey and white. The same situation happens when using satins, colour overlay, shadows and whatever other effects that involves colours. The colour box appear. But when I choose a colour, the effects are only shown in black and white. What's the problem?

First, it would be really helpful if you could upload a screen shot of your Photoshop window including the Options bar and Panels.

Second, what is your color space set to? Is it in RGB or Grayscale?

What are the image’s Color Mode and bit depth?

Are Adjustment Layers present above the objects you are editing?
