Can't edit smart object directly

Explorer ,
Jan 27, 2022 Jan 27, 2022

All of a sudden I am receiving the message "Could not complete. Smart object is not directly editable." I went into preferences and turned off "always create smart objects when placing" because it doesn't let me do certain things on the background layer (Such as patch tool and delete) but still get the message. Is there somehting I can do to get around this? I don't do a lot of things on the background layer but the patch tool and delete is one I use a lot. Thanks so much.

You can either double click on the smart object layer to open it and edited it, or rasterize it (don't make a smart object when placing), or make a blank layer above it and use the option use current and below, if offer, for the tool.

Thank you. When I double click on the smart object, I am still unable to do certain editing within Photoshop. when I make a blank layer above it, I do not see an option to have current layer and below. how do I go about placing it without it being a smart object? I open my image in Camera RAW for some initial edits but then turn everything into Photoshop for more detailed edits.

Do you by any chance have ACR set to always open as smart object?

The quickest solution would be to rasterize the Smart Object.

right-click on the Layer or go to Layer > Rasterize.
