I am using CS3. I've used a tutorial found on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tatYcybFdCo&t=561s) to create an Archimedes spiral and now I want to have text run along the spiral from the outside, just like in the video.
I created concentric circles per the video, moved the bottom half to create a spiral, then merged the layers. I made it into a path successfully. I then went to the Paths tab, selected the spiral path, and then clicked the text tool and attempted to place it on the path.
When I hover over the path, I get the correct "text path" cursor. However when I click, I get a small circle with an x in it. I am unable to type or paste or edit any text.
I uploaded 3 screenshots. 1: my workspace immediately before clicking the text tool.
2: showing that I have the right text cursor when hovering over the path
3: the result after clicking.
From this point on I am stuck and cannot add text to the path at any point. Please help!

Could simply be a bug or limitation in those older versions. As a start, try a different font. That said, perhaps your time is spent better learning how to draw a proper spiral from scratch without such hacks. the whole tutorial is just weird and the resulting path unnecessarily messy and complex.

It may be so, unfortunately, I don't know of a better way to do it. I am not a professional. I tried using the pen tool and I was successful in getting text on the path, however, it wasn't a smooth path at all. How would I draw a perfect spiral from scratch?

Also, it does work when I make a spiral with a pen, jic that isn't clear. I just don't like the way the spiral looks when I use a pen and it's extremely time consuming to make 20+ concentric rings with a pen. I am on a tight deadline LOL.
I am pretty sure I'm doing something wrong and not catching it, because I rarely work with text paths and am not familiar with them.
