  • OS: Win 10

Steps to reproduce:

1. Create a new file
2. Add text and use a Bulleted list (any font)
3. Convert text to Paragraph text, move bounds of the text
4. Safe the file
5. Try to open again or try to place it as embedded/linked

Expected result: Open the file
Actual result: File is not opening, Photoshop freezes, can't do anything

Hey, @Eli30092232hcw1. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. Thanks for the details. I tried to recreate this issue using the video on a test device, but it did not work.

When you save the PSD, the pop-up for Maximize Compatibility does not show up. Please check the Preferences > File Handling & check if it is set to Always, or Never.

If this does not help, please try these steps:
Go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to backup.

  • Windows 10/11: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
  • You can press Press the Windows key > Enter 'Run' > Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe
  • Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2025 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2025. old), You can restore these preferences later if needed.(https://adobe.ly/4860qM9)
  • Restart the computer.

These changes will give a fresh start to Photoshop as a fresh install. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks!

@Sameer K

I've also tried an older version of PS and it works properly (25.12.0 20240903.r.806 055f5e9 x64)

Thanks for sharing the details. Does the issue exist with Photoshop (beta)?

We're unable to recreate this and as you've shared, the other machine does not recreate. The issue might isolated at your machine.

Please try creating a new user account on your machine and check if the issue exists: https://adobe.ly/4hAjV4D

Let me know how it goes.

I have also just encountered this same problem,  I've tried on a number of different fonts.
Version: Adobe Photoshop Version: 26.5.0 20250318.r.16 0a154be x64
Also tested in Beta Version: Adobe Photoshop Version: 26.6.0 20250406.m.3035 d2362a1 x64

I've been able to to recreate the issue multiple times this way:
1. Create a 1000x1000 canvas

2. Add a text layer (which font you use doesn't seem to matter
3. Type any text "Test" used in my examples and put a minus - at the start of the text to turn it into a paragraph. (Alternatively in the text properties click one of the buttons to make the text a list/bulletin/numbered list
4. Save the PSD (either with or without compatibility mode) and close photoshop
5. Re-open photoshop and try to open that PSD

You will recieve the popup shown in the attached image. Clicking "Update" will give the error shown in the image and when you click "Okay" phtoshop will then crash and ask to send an error report. If you click "No" to not update the text layer you can not interact with that text layer at all, clicking in it within the document or the layers list will also freeze and crash photoshop.
