Can’t open video files in Photoshop 2022, 2023, 2024 with Macbook Pro M1

Macbook Pro (M1, 2021)

MacOS Monterey

Version 12.1

Photoshop 25.3.1/ 24.7.2

When I added a video file to a timeline in Photoshop, I got the following error. "Could not complete the New Video Layer from File command because the footage is not a recognized format."

I also downloaded other older versions to try but none of them can open the video file, I've been searching through the forums and web for solutions for hours, but still can't find a solution.

I would really appreciate help to fix this issue. Thanks ahead of time!

Hey, @Ting29340671nxl4. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll need specific info to help you figure this out.

Does this happen with a specific video, or do all videos behave similarly? Could you share a sample video here or via direct message from my profile?

As primary steps, follow these steps & check how it goes:
1 - Download sample videos from the internet & check if they open as expected.

2 - Ensure Photoshop has the required permissions on the macOS: https://adobe.ly/3uQcToX

3 - Update & upgrade Photoshop & macOS on your machine.

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

Do the videos open successfully in Apple QuickTime Player?

This is related to kevin stohlmeyer’s question about codecs.

Hi,

I had the same problem, while making high quality GIFS. I have a solution, but I don't know if it will help your case. I work on MacBook Pro 14 (2023), M2. I did check all the articles about it being in the right codec, it still didn't work.

For the context : I use a plugin for older versions of Photoshop, so for it to work, I have to quit Photoshop, Go to > Applications> Photoshop.App> Right Click>Info> and Check Open Using Rosetta. Now that thing, apparently messed up the  file reading.

Solution:

Quit Photoshop. Go to Applications> Photoshop.App> Right Click>Info> and UNCHECK Open Using Rosetta

Then go back to Photoshop> Import> Video frames to Layers OR if you want it as a Clip, just open it like a normal file.

(To make high-quality GIFs is a real hustle with such setup because the Export(Web) Legacy Tab will work for me only when Photoshop is open using Rosetta, otherwise it's greyed out)

So maybe try this. Maybe even Using Rosetta will do the trick?

Version 23.4 is required for native M1 video support. Can you open the videos with QuickTime Player or VLC? You may need to transcode if the video codec/format isn't supported.

If photoshop can't open some video codecs or formats of video, it means photoshop doesn't support video files. It's simple as ... you know

It's not as simple as that, because Photoshop has been able to open video files and edit them in its Timeline panel for many years. It should work, and on my M1 Pro (same processor as the original post in this thread) it does work.

Also, you are responding to a thread where the last post was months ago.
