Does anyone know why all of a sudden (it came out of nowhere, but I've been dealing with it all month) I am getting a Couldn't find background to remove when I try to use the Remove Background tool?

Correct answer

Really odd!
see what it is:

If the problems persist, I would check with customer services to see if there is an issue with your account.

Logged out, logged back in, tried remove background again and still got couldn't find a background to remove message. Strangely enough, I went back to preferences and switched from Device to Cloud and then Remove background worked so.....I'm all confused now

Hi @Lea32211303ylaz! Thank you for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear about your issue. Please share when you first became aware of this issue. Maybe after an update to the OS or Photoshop? Is this issue specific to certain image formats for you, or does it occur across all image formats?

Could you please share your system info from Photoshop, so that we can take a closer look? Lightroom from Help > System info > Copy and paste the contents into a text/Word file and attach it to your response.

In the meantime, here are a couple of things to try/ check to see if they make a difference:

1) Try the Preferences attached in the screenshot.

2) Turn off your GPU in Preferences > Performance > uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" and check again.

3) Try resetting your preferences. Here's how you do it: Reset preferences, but make sure you have them backed up beforehand: Backup and restore preferences.

Thanks a bunch!

Please use @ when mentioning my username so that I can be notified as soon as possible.

I am wondering if you weren't on a blank layer? (It happened to me and I had a sort of brain fog, got frustrated until I figured out it wouldn't work except on a standard layer or a smart one)

In case it's not that, can you share the whole window? (with the layer panel visible)
That way if something clicks, we will be able to see it...
(also, there have been an minor update today, see if updating resolves it)

Thanks, it helps a lot. First of all, it shouldn't be happening, the feature should work even on a locked background (I tried, just in case, as I rarely work directly on the background ;ayer). I don't see anything that be a cause of concern in the screencast.
Stupid question: did you try with another image?

The only other thing I could think of on the top of my head would be a glitch in the CC syncing.
THere is this link which will tell you if there is any maintenance or service disruption at the moment.

I can see one for for "experience Cloud", so not really our concern.

@46847751 try setting this option to device rather than cloud in the PS preferences

Hey, first of all thanks for the reply, but it was already set to Device, see here:
