Can't save work because "scratch disks are full"

I'm on macOS.

Photoshop gave me the warning, and selected my usual external drive for scratch disks since it was not turned on before. It still gives me an error upon attempting to save. I need to hand in deliverables in an hour.

Set your scratch disk in prefs to another drive with 10x the space of the files you plan to deliver.   That will allow you to deliver your work on time.

Yeah I already did that. Anyways, it crashed and lost all my work. Oh well. Typical Adobe.
