Can't upload .nef files in PS CS2

I just installed Photoshop CS2 v.9. I am not able to upload .nef files (photos taken on a Nikon D700, which is one of the listed cameras), although I had no trouble doing so with my older version of PS.

How can I upload .nef files into PS CS2? Must I use "Camera Raw," a separate Adobe app? It would be nice to be able to do it in one app (that is, PS CS2).

What was your older version of PS? Did you buy an upgrade to CS2?

The camera raw plugin should be automatically installed when you install  CS2.

However, CS2 uses Camera raw version 3, and the D700 requires at least version 5.1, so your only option is to use the DNG converter, which you can download here: Adobe Digital Negative Converter

Read the instructions for use carefully, the most important point being that you cannot point the converter to individual files, it only works on the folder level.

You will also need to set Compatibility to version 2.4 and later in the preferences.

Camera Raw is required. You could think of it like a plugin.

Another option is to download the free DNG converter which is suppose to always be up to date and will convert a raw file to their native DNG format that all versions can open. (Except for those previous to the DNG introduction [what ever year that was])
