I have photo where with my Brush and shift I draw lines around an object in the photo.  How to I turn those lines around that object into a selection?  I thank you in advance.  Tim

Obviously I don't know what I am doing.  Follow me please.  I have a photo of a painting taken on an angle so the painting is a trapezoid.  Can you give a step by step of how you would select that trapezoid shape in Photoshop 2018?  Appreciate your patience.

    Use the Polygonal Lasso tool:

Click on the corners of the painting in order, either clockwise or counterclockwise, and click back on the starting point. You will see the cursor chang to having a little circle by it. Click, and you will have your trapezoidal selection.

Choose the Perspective Crop Tool (it is nested with the Crop Tool). Click on the first corner. Drag the cursor and click on 3  more corners. Then float the cursor over the first mark you made and rest for a moment. The word Crop will appear. Click on it.

Sorry to be obtuse, but still unable. I have the image. I select new layer. I use the brush-shift to draw lines around my object and I tried CMD+click everywhere in the image and the layers window to no avail.  Help?  (I like your drones.)

I was using the brush to outline the painting but could not turn it into a selection.  Thanks again.

    Hi Tim,

If you are trying to select the painting with the brush tool, that won’t work. There are many, many ways to make a selection; the brush tool is not one of them.

One similar method to what you describe is to use the Pen tool in Path mode and then convert it to a selection with Cmd + Return (Ctrl + Enter on Windows).

If you show your image we might be able to better assist with an appropriate selection method for your project.
