I have been creating shapes on CS4 and managing to fill them with text for a couple of years now. I have now got CC and for the life of me i cannot do it. I have followed the reliable tutorials on google that i have used many times as i thought i was going a bit mad but nope, still cannot do it. In fact, it's not working on my old PC with CS4 either.
Whether i create a shape or a path (and then draw the heart shape from the custom shape tool) i click to add text and yes, the cursor changes and i can add text AROUND the shape but when i go inside the shape the cursor reverts to regular text cursor and does not place my text inside the shape.
Getting really desperate and frustrated now and i give up! I have looked at loads of similar threads and none of them have helped. It's probably something really simple but really need your help on this please.
I considered myself to be fairly good with PS but clearly not so simple steps for my simple brain please!

What happens when you mouse over a shape? Your type tool should have a circle around it instead of a square....

nope, i know what it should look like but just doesnt change. If i move the cursor to the edge it changes with a wave through it and allows me to put text around it, but once i move inside it reverts to the normal text cursor.

I don't know why it's not working for you... try using some modifier keys - hold shift, try cmd / ctr while mousing over to see if it makes a difference. Also try creating your shape in different ways in the options bar... try shape and path - not pixels.

Hi
When you make your shape make sure path operations is set to "New Layer" or "combine shapes" and shape path looks like this
Not subtract front shape with shape path looking like this :

Thank you Dave. Still no luck. Think that's right and STILL get the regular text cursor inside. I get a wavy on the edge and can add text around the path but not inside. Arghhhhhh!

Would you mind showing us an example of what you are trying to accomplish? Maybe an image of one that you have created in the past?

This is what i have created previously. I can actually still edit this but no good as i want to use a different shape

You are attempting to insert the text on the same layer as the shape, right? You wont be able to draw your shape, create a new layer and then enter your text.

Is anyone willing or able to create a working one of these hearts for me please, sized to A4 preferably, that i can see if it works from a recently saved file? As i cant seem to resolve this is there a way of contacting Adobe to help? - i mean i do pay a monthly subscription for something that just isnt working properly for me!

As a workaround you can try something like below.
Select the Shape Tool and use the Square Shape and draw it out small, then draw your Heart and you should be able to type inside now.
If you use Shape Layers instead of paths, then both shapes have to be drawn on the same shape layer.

Apparently the reason some of the preset shapes that ship with photoshop aren't working for text inside a path is they are not fully closed and can be corrected using the pen tool as described here:
Photoshop: Can't put text inside a shape | Photoshop Family Customer Community
So with your Heart Shape/Path, just draw out your shape/path, then select the pen tool and hover over the bottom point until you see
a small square with two horizontal lines like shown in the below screenshot, then just click twice to close the path.
You should see in the history panel from the first click is Pick-up Path and the second click is Close Path, then you should be able to type inside the path.
For other shapes that don't work with type inside a path, it could be any point on the path that needs closing, not necessarily the bottom point, so just hover around the different points with the pen tool until the offending point is found.

I had the same problem and I fixed it by myself. Rasterize the shape then Select it, then go to Paths and make a shape from the selection. You will be able now to add text to any shape you want.
