Cannot edit object

Community Beginner ,

Hi there,

This may be confusing but I will try to explain it as clearly as possible. So I have an image with a garden and the sky is present. The garden is dark so I have added a warming photo filter to bring some colour into it. The problem arises when I select the sky using the quick selection tool, it only seems to edit the garden and doesn't allow me to edit the sky. How can I adjust the brightness and filter of 2 objects without it being stuck on the first one.

I hope this made sense but it's really affecting my experience.

Many thanks!

The work-around is using multiple instances of the Smart Object with different Smart Filters (settings) applied and masking those.

A screen shot would help.

Hi

Can you post a screenshot with all the pertinent panels opened, you could copy the sky to it's own layer and apply a brightness/contrast layer clipped to the sky layer

Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels (Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible?

All Smart Filters applied to one instance of a Smart Object share one Filter Mask.

The work-around is using multiple instances and masking those.

Thanks for your replies. This shows the layers and channels. There was nothing present under paths.

I also think it might be easier to use Adjustment Layers in this case... Now you've added Smart Filters (which is not bad at all, by the way ), so you only have one mask now... You cannot edit the filters independently any more.

So, when you start again you can do this:

  1. Make a selection of the garden first when you only want to edit the garden (or select the sky and then inverse the selection using Select > Inverse)
  2. Go to the Adjustments Panel (Window > Adjustments) and click the Brightness/Contrast button (If you want to brighten the garden like you did before)
  3. Then add the Warming Filter using the Photo Filter button in the Adjustments panel, without making a selection if you want to warm the entire picture. If you only want to use the Warming filter on the sky, first select the sky and then click the Photo Filter button in the Adjustments panel.

Like c.pfaffenbichler wrote, in addition you can also add a Camera Raw filter to this Smart Object to brighten the shadows, for example. Select the Smart Object and go to Filter > Camera Raw Filter.

I hope this helps.

It appears that the sky is selected and used in the mask.  just select the mask and use Command/Control / I to invert the mask.

A good rule of thumb is that any selection will be the mask in that layer if you add a mask after the selection was created.

Another option, especially if one has the RAW image, might be using Adobe Camera Raw’s (or the Camera Raw Filter˚s) adjustment and masking options.
