Cannot export planet-scale image

The NASA offers images of several planets. I went to https://mars.asu.edu/data/mola_color/ and downloaded all the tiles for Mars. Then, I re-attached all the tiles using Photoshop 25.1.0. That works and I could make edits, e.g. apply adjustment layers etc. The final image size is 46080 x 23040 pixels.

You can download my Photoshop Mars document from here: https://nx144.your-storageshare.de/s/KHx3wFS3Lbx28Yj

My issue is, that I cannot export the result:

  • File -> Export -> Export As: Loads forever the preview image. I found no way to disable the preview image.
  • File -> Export -> Layers to file -> PNG: Never finished the export.
  • File -> Save a Copy: The CPU-load goes to 100%, but it never finishes the export. I stopped the process after a while.

It is not relevant if using macOS 14.1 or Windows 11. It's the same behavior. The Windows machine has 64 GB of RAM, so that's not the issue as well.

But it should be doable: I can open the Photoshop document using Affinity Photo and export it there. It took just 20 seconds or so to finish (on macOS and Windows).

In addition to the Adobe Export Layers to Files script that ships with Photoshop, there are numerous custom scripts for exporting layers in these forums, which may perform better. Have you tried a different format than PNG (some users report slow PNG save times from Photoshop compared to other formats).

You could try the following scripts and search the web for more yourself:

When launching Export for a 20 000 pixel file, I get this

Well, at least it's a step forward from 8192px  :]

Edit:

Save for Web (Legacy) has a limitation of 8192px on the longest edge, otherwise, downsizing will occur.

Export As/Quick Export has a limitation of 15,000px on the longest edge, otherwise, downsizing will occur.

Er...you cannot Export at that size (40 000 pixels wide). You need to use Save As (or Save A Copy).

Export is for web/screen/mobile devices. Small and light files.

@Stephen Marsh: Thank you very much. You have helped me in several ways. In fact, Photoshop can export my Mars document as a JPG. I had not expected that when the PNG export failed. Your hints about the scripts were also very helpful. Especially the Export-Layers-to-Files-Fast script is very useful. I hope that the PNG export will be improved with an upcoming update, though.
