Question

Cannot find xmp files from editing RAW images

First of all, I do not use Lightroom. I use Photoshop to edit RAW images. So all of this is related to using Photoshop. My current version is Adobe Photoshop CC release 19.1.2.

Just a few weeks ago, when I open a RAW image and make edits in Photoshop, the corresponding xmp file is created in the same folder of the original image. I use the .xmp file if I need to edit the RAW image in the future, and as a reminder for myself whether I have edited this image or not.

In the last few days, I noticed that the .xmp file is no longer appearing in the same folder. The info in the xmp file is still there - I know this because if I close and reopen a RAW image, all my edits are still there. However even after doing a search, I cannot figure out where the .xmp files are stored.

Anyone have any ideas?

You may need to switch settings (to use CR database), edit an image, then switch back (XMP) and then edit again in order to force an update?

Hi

In Photoshop go to Preferences > Camera Raw and check whether save image settings in "Sidecar ".xmp" files" is still checked. if not, the info will be being saved to a camera raw database

As an aside - Photoshop is now at 19.1.5 - you may want to update

This is still checked. I am not sure what else could be wrong.

I am going to upgrade to the latest PS release, restart my computer, and try again,

Thanks Dave!

So I upgraded to release 19.1.5, restarted my computer, and the setting above is still checked, but no .xmp files...

Does anyone else have any ideas?
