Cannot open Tif file in Photoshop

I try to open a tif file I scanned and I get the error message: "Could not recognize. your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file."

I've seen others on the forum have posted about this before, but I could not find any answers.

A few things:

1. The thumbnail displays in Bridge

2. The file will open in Gimp and other non Adobe applications, so it is not a damaged file as far as I can see.

3. I have other tif files that open without problems, but it seems all these particular scans have issues.

4. I did try opening it again in Gimp via Bridge. This time I got a message from Gimp stating "Depreciate and troublesome old-style JPEG compression mode, please conver to new-style JPEG compression and notify vendor of writing software"

I realize this is an Adobe forum, but is that Gimp message a clue that the file is not really a Tif or something?

Thoughts?

From what you say, it sounds like your scanning software is causing the issue. I can think of a couple of possible solutions:

  • Change the settings in your scanning software (you didn't say what you are using or what your settings are)
  • Use different scanning software (I use VueScan by Hamrick)
  • Open the image in Gimp and do a Save As > Tiff, then see if that will open in Photoshop.

Let us know if any of these ideas fix this for you.

You might be able to open the tif in adobe camera raw and then open the file into photoshop.
