I would like to record selecting the Gradient tool then selecting a particular gradient in an action. However, the action is empty. Is there a trick to doing this? Thanks.

Not all actions in Photoshop are recordable. Sometimes you must look for alternate way if possible. If you cannot record/figure out how to do something then use Insert Stop to record message for the user with instructions. After completing instructions user can resume playing action. Everything will work fine and no steps will be missed for the final result.

    Hi Bazsl:

There are two ways to add a gradient (with or without an action):

    1. Select the gradient tool and drag across a layer, or
    2. Use a Layer Style. If you are using a Layer Style and selecting a preset gradient—which I am guessing you are—you need to have pixels on that layer. If the layer is completely empty, a layer style won't show up.

Both work with actions, but I think the empty layer is tripping you up. If you share a screen shot of what you want, I can be more specific.

I should have provided more detail. I need to record an action that does the following:

    1) Sets the foreground color.

    2) Sets the background color.

    3) Selects the Gradient tool.

    4) Selects the foreground to background gradient.

1 and 2 are recorded in the action. 3 and 4 are not.

I tried to do it and it recorded the entire thing. Do you want also to draw at the end with the gradient tool?
