Cannot repeat alignment with Photomerge (PS 2024)

In Bridge 2024, I opened two versions of the same scene from Camera Raw > Photoshop 2024: one with the subject centered better, one with the focus a little better but offset a bit. I used whether File > Scripts > Load File Into Stack to test whether they were sufficiently similar to use the one to fill in a bit of the background for the other. It just dumped them on top of each other without addressing the offset.

Then instead I used File > Automate > Photomerge > Automatic, and the result was promising enough to make it worth reopening the raw/NEF images in Camera Raw to fix the exposure before repeating the Photomerge. I did not make any changes with the crop tool--no crop or rotation.

And: "some images could not be aligned".

I tried repeating the stack > photomerge sequence in case the preliminary stack left some useful trace that allowed the photomerge to work the first time, and I reset the images to open as default without any adjustments.

No joy.

I cannot find a cache in Photoshop to delete anymore--the only cache option I could see permitted using the Help menu to search for 'cache' was to purge the 'video cache'. I did that. I also purged the cache in Bridge for the relevant folder.

I also quit both apps, restarted my Mac (running Sequoia 15.0.1, latest version), restarted the apps.

No joy.

Why might Photoshop have happily aligned two images for Photomerge once and not again?
