Question

Cannot use “edit in”

  • January 9, 2023

I cannot use the "edit in"—edit in Adobe PS 2023. This problem just started occuring today Jan . 8th. I have no idea what changed . I have 24.1.0 PS and 12.1 LR. I have seen conflicting answers with several people having the same issue. Do I in fact have to reinstall PS? If so, how do I perform a soft install? Thank you in advance.

Perhaps try a thorough reset of Photoshop preferences?

(read this entire post before acting please)

Resetting restores Photoshop's internal preferences, which are saved when Photoshop closes.

If they become corrupt then various issues can occur.

Here’s some info on how to do that:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Manually removing preferences files is the most complete method for restoring Photoshop to its default state:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Note re macOS: The user Library folder is hidden by default.

To access files in the hidden user Library folder, see here for how to access hidden user library files.

https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/access-hidden-user-library-files.html

Unexpected behavior may indicate damaged preferences. Restoring preferences to their default settings is a good idea when trying to troubleshoot unexpected behaviors in Photoshop. check out the video

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#reset_preferences

Learn how to access and modify Photoshop preferences and customize per your frequent workflows

And here’s an earlier forum discussion as an aid to understanding

https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/quick-tips-how-to-reset-photoshop-preferences/td-p/12502668

You may want to backup your settings and custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences.

Here is general info about that:  https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#BackupPhotoshoppreferences

Before you reset your preferences

in case of future issues, I suggest you make a copy as Adobe may need one to check problematic references.

Quit Photoshop.
Go to Photoshop's Preferences folder

Preferences file locations: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-names-locations-photoshop.html\

[on MacOS see: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Note for those on macOS: - be aware that the user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS.

  https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/access-hidden-user-library-files.html

In the Finder, open the “Go” menu whilst holding down the Option (Alt) key.

Library will now appear in the list - below the current user's “home” directory. ]

Now you can drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to the desktop or somewhere safe as a back-up of your settings.

Note for those on macOS:

Preference preservation is affected by macOS permissions,

you’ll need to allow Photoshop ‘Full Disk Access’ in your Mac OS Preferences/Security and Privacy

It may even be time to reinstall Photoshop.

It’s recommended that you use the Adobe CC cleaner tool to remove all traces first.

(See above about preserving preferences though! Its worth preserving them unless they are corrupted.)

https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

Uninstall Photoshop BUT make sure to choose the option “Yes, remove app preference”.

Once that process finishes, start the installation process and look into the “Advanced Options”. Uncheck “Import previous settings and preferences” and choose to “Remove old versions”.

I hope this helps

I read your link. This is very similiar to my problem.  Will try to reset my preferences in PS first.  If that does not work, it looks like I will need to reinstall PS. I am reading about soft install. Not sure what that means unless it simply means NOT to uninstall PS first, just install over my PS? I hate to lose all my Actions and settings. I will research how to save all of them first.

If 'Edit in Photoshop' is dimmed, then the most likely explanation is that the original photo is 'missing' in Lightroom Classic, for example because it is on a drive that is currently offline. You may not notice it if you have smart previews. Lightroom Classic can edit the image using the smart preview, but it cannot send a smart preview to Photoshop. It does need access to the original for that.

No, the edit options is not greyed out. It is there and acts as though I can edit the image. In fact, PS opens at that time. No image will open. I have been using both PS and LR for years. I am editing a RAW file and have never had issues with that.

Grazie mille

I will be specific. I apologize. When I am in LR and I want to edit that image in PS. I right click and choose "edit in" Edit in PS 2023, at that time PS opens the program. When I go to PS, the program is open but the image will not appear. Even if  I use the menu keys up top, "photo" edit in....the image will still not open in PS.

Please note, PS works, I can just no longer open from LR. This is something that is extremely common for me to do. It just stopped working yesterday Jan. 8 2023.

No changes were made to either program. Not sure when the programs were automatically updated to 12.1 for LR and 24.1.0 for PS.

No problem to edit image in Photoshop 24.1.0 from Lightroom 12.1. On my end I do not see options

  • Edit with Lightroom Adjustments
  • Edit a Copy
  • Edit the original.

That is normal. You will only see these choices if you send an RGB image, not if you send a raw image.

I used to see these options, and yes only when I had previously edited the image. I send raw images all the time. I have been using both LR and PS since 2017. No errors, PS opens but never open the image I requested to be edited.

Are you getting any particular error messages? Could you please post a screen shot?

Have you tried restarting the programs and your computer?

Do you see warning in the top right corner of image you are trying to edit? I think there is warning. Test with second, fift and sixt image in filmstrip.

No, no warning. I have tried various images, from other folders too.

This is where I am at this morning. Saved all my preferences, and actions (just to make sure) , reset preferences, reboot PS. Will advise.
