When I try to make a color change with black and white colors on 16 bit, the color shift has noticable edges

The answer was option b, it wasn't an issue with the monitor but it really feels odd that there isnt enough color to make the shift better. I whish there was a way to add more colors, anyways thank you.

The monitor is not faulty, but the issue is caused by using an 8 bit/channel monitor. There just aren't enough steps at the darker end of the range to avoid the stepping. Adding noise (dither) hides the impact by taking the sharp edges off the steps.

Check with the eyedropper and info tool whether those steps (called banding) are in the document or just the on screen preview.

Unless you are using a 10 bit/channel monitor, connected via a GPU that supports and is enabled for 10 bits/channel and have enabled 30 bit display in Photoshop Preferences >  Performance, then when using 16 bits/channel in the document the preview you are looking at will be restricted to your display chain's 8 bits/channel and therefore still appear to step.

I checked with eyedrop tool, nothing wrong there, i enabled 30 bit displayed, nothing changed. Could it be because of the color settings?

Hi

As far as I can see, that is an 8-bit/channel monitor. That means that, even when your document is 16 bit and has no stepping, your on screen view of it, will be limited by that monitor and exhibit stepping that is not in the document. It is a limitation of 8 bit monitors (some of which are actually 6 bit + FRC to simulate 8 bits).

Your choice is :

a. Accept that the stepping  is just in your display and not in your document and carry on. A valid choice that is made by many.

b. Add a little noise to your document which will help hide the stepping. On a 16 bit doc thought that is adding noise to hide a defect that is not in the actual document. Depending on how your final document will be used, adding a little noise/dither should avoid stepping on conversion to 8 bit for export.

c. Look for a 10 bit/channel monitor for critical adjustment. These tend to be expensive though,  especially those designed with other critical viewing conditions in mind, such as good uniformity across the panel, and internal LUTs for color calibration. I use Eizo CS2731s here, but they are not cheap.
