Can't see other scratch disc options in PS

I have quite a conundrum. First, I was not able to drag and drop files into Photoshop, but I solved the issue by not running the app as an admin. But, not running Photoshop as an admin doesn't allow me to use my second SSD as a scratch disk - it just doesn't show up in the list of available drives. Ironically, the only way to fix that is to run PS as an admin, thereby eliminating the ability to drag & drop files into the app.

So, this is my issue:

1) run PS as an admin = can see all available scratch disks, but cannot drag & drop files into PS

2) run PS as a regular user = cannot see all available scratch disks, yet can drag & drop files into PS

I have found no method that both allows me to see all available scratch disks AND be able to drag & drop files into PS - I can only do one or the other, but not both.

Apparently your regular user account doesn't have full read/write permissions on all disks. That's an OS setting.

Ok, so if I set the permissions for my second larger drive in the security settings to allow full control/read/write permissions, then when I open my scratch disk options in PS it should be listed as a drive I can then choose?

From what I've managed to find online, I definatley dont want to be running the app as administator.

Hi all,

Recently installed PS but the program didnt list both of my hard drives so I could allocate the one with space on it as my 'scratch disk' location.

I managed to resolve this by right clicking on the PH.exe file and choosing 'run as administrator'. Now when I open PH, i can go to edit/preferances/scratch disk and can see my other hard drive that I'v now allocated.

However, now that I've opened the program as adminstartor, PH wont allow me to drag and drop images/photos into the program.

Have solved one program, but now created another!

Hi,

When you run Photoshop in "normal" user mode (not admin), do you have rights to access the second drive? Write/Read rights?

Running in 'normal' mode now (admin was causing too many dramas), but can only see my c drive as an option for scratch disk location.

It sounds like its to do with settings on the drive itself in my OS. I've been into the security tab and made sure I have full control/read/write, but it is still not showing up in PS as a location option for my scratch disks?

Only soluton I can see is to make make sure my c drive has enough space, but it would be nice to see the other drive as an option....Do you have any other suggestion on what I can do with the settings on the drive itself to allow PS to see it?

Hi all,

First time user of PS. Have manged to install ok. but as soon as I start any work I get a 'scratch disks are full' message.

I've been into Edit/preferances to change from my c drive to my d drive which has loads of space, howver, i cant see of choose my d drive as a option it only lists my c drive.

I aslo tried holding crtl & alt on bootup which gave me the same pop up window, but I can only see my c drive there too.

(my creative cloud app and PH and LR are installed on the d drive).

Any help much appreciated.

What are the disks’ formats? (see »Supported drive formats for scratch disks« on the linked page)

You really need to free up space on your C drive, you're going to run into issues on an operating system level, you should ideally have about 15% to 20% for mechanical drives and 25% for SSD's of free space

Thanks - yes thats definatley what I'm doing now, clearing what I can on the c drive.

 But I'd like to be able to see my other drives in PS to allocate them as the scratch disk location if I choose. At the moment they're not even showing up, can only see cdrive. Its sounds like its a 'format/secuirty' issue in my OS.....

I've been into the security tab of my missing drives and ensured that I have full control but its still not showing up in PS...??

There really is no point in doing that. Your C drive will still keep filling up, under your user account, with all kinds of settings, caches and so on. This will go to your C drive regardless. The program files are the least of it.

As Ged says, 5 GB free on your system drive is an emergency situation that you need to deal with immediately. Your whole machine may freeze up at any moment. I can fill up 5 GB in thirty seconds.
