Hello.

I had photoshop CS6 installed and I used to make grid for Instagram. I went File> New. Set canvas size to 3240 x 3240 and create.

Then I went File> Place embeded and selected the photo, then proceeded to crop and resize via transform. I liked to leave the canvas as a white border , but now with photoshop 21.1.1 whenever I cropp, the canvas is also cropped and I dont know how to fix it.

Crop, crops all layer in a document.  While the Smart Object will not bet cropped. The smart object layer pixels are. You can use free transform on the smart Object layer to edit the smart object layers associated layer transform to resize the smart object smaller to expose some of the background layer's white pixels.

The background layer is always crop size. Background layers do not Support transparency, They are always canvas size and crop will change the documents canvas size.  Canvas size can crop as well as add canvas.

Why in the world  do you create a document 3240 by 3240 pixels for Instagram?
