My text is automatically capital even if I turn on and off caps lock.

Open the Character panel. At the bottom is a row of buttons. Turn off the formatting for All Caps.

I'm not in my office so I can't take a screenshot. Open the Character panel from the Window menu. There is a row of icons near the bottom for All Caps, Small Caps, Fake Bold, Fake Italics, Superscript, Subscript, etc.
Select your text, then turn off the Caps button.
