Change color on textured backgrounds

I recently acquired a bunch of textured backgrounds, like crumpled paper, cloth, or forms. They are all grayscale and (I believe) are meant to be colorized or merged onto things. I'd love to see a tutorial, but don't know what information to search for. Advice?

You can use many blending modes like Overlay, Soft Light, Multiply... and so on to apply texture to layer below... or you can place image above texture and use blending mode to achieve final result. It depends what final effect you want to achieve. Play with textures and you will find your style or interesting result.

To colorize texture use Hue/Saturation and option Colorize. After checking Colorize increase Saturation then drag Hue and perhaps and Lightness slider to fine tune colorization.

Try applying them above your image with blend mode multiply. Then adjust the effect with the opacity of the texture layer (in the layers panel)
