Question

Changing the colour of scanned artwork

Hi all,

I've scanned this beautiful border from a book to use in a period graphic I am making. However, the designer has asked for the pattern to be red and the background to be a cream colour and i'm struggling with changing the colour! I've actually matched the background of the graphic to the background of the scan as it was the right colour anyway (the peach colour), so I have to figure out how to change the background of the scan to cream too. I hope that makes sense and i'm very grateful for any help you can give!

Many thanks,

Lois

norman.sanders, davescm, and melissapiccone all have great suggestions as to how to get this accomplished. I have used all 3 methods in the past in my graphic design work.

Fig 1. Original image

Fig 2. Copy Red channel and place as a layer above Background layer. Turn off Background layer.

Fig 3. Duplicate the red-channel layer. Set the Blending mode to Multiply, then Layer > Merge Down to create a single, more intense red-channel layer. (Add mask to eliminate the type.)

Fig 4. Image > Hue/Saturation. Checkmark Colorize. Note settings used.

Fig 5. Place a blank layer below the red-channel layer, return to red-channel layer and double click to bring up Layer Style. Use Blend If and setting s noted. The Layer > Merge down

Fig 6. Add layer below the red-channel layer and Edit > Fill with cream color

Hi

Try a gradient map adjustment layer - adjusting the gradient as shown and using a mask so that it does not affect the black text

1. I used a black and white adjustment layer to make it black and white.

2. duplicate a channel - doesn't matter which one

3. use levels (cmd/cntr + l) to make it all black and white - basically push the arrows all the way to the right.

4. hold cmd/cntr and click on the channel icon to make a selection

5. invert selection (cm/ctr  + shift + i)

6. make a new layer, fill the selection with red
