Channels won't let me duplicate?

I using photoshop and im trying to Duplicate a channel but the option is grayed out? and when i hit"command j" the Alpha is just completely black. Its not copying the channel I have selected. is there something im doing wrong?

Is this happening in mulutiple documents or just one document?

all docs, doesnt matter what it is. I just uninstalled PS, and reinstalled to see if maybe that will fix it.

Cmd+J duplicates the layer not the channel.

 

By default there is no shortcut assigned to duplicate channel. In versions prior to v21.1 you could right click a channel and choose duplicate channel. Due to a bug, that right click context menu does not work in v21.1 so you need the drop down menu at the top right of the channels panel.

Im sorry i didnt mean CMD J, i meant another short cut, i can't remember by heart but hands know it when im using it, if that makes sense. lol Either way its def. not working. but i've read through the forum and i seems like, like you said other people are also experiancing the same issue.

Channels or layers? How exactly are you trying to duplicate? What colour mode?
