Clicking and Selecting Problem

When I try to add text in photoshop the text box appears in a different place than where I clicked. The placement seems random, as the text box appears in a different place each time. The text box also seems to vary in size.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how to stop it? I'm using the latest version and my computer is a Dell laptop and I'm using its trackpad and buttons. The problem doesn't happen when I'm using a Wacom drawing tablet to click.

edit: it turns out that when I try to use the lasso tool it just goes nuts and my entire canvas is very quickly selected like I just went crazy with the mouse and moved it around erratically. it might have a similar cause. I changed the subject to reflect this new issue

edit 2: i uninstalled and reinstalled photoshop and that seemed ot fix it

There also should be no box  unless you first drag out a text box then there will be a bounding box with control points and the cursor will be positioned to the first line  of text location left center or right depending on the text option bar text justification icon the cursor will also be font height below top bounding box edge. With 21.2 make sure in your Photoshop preferences Performance section that Legacy compositing is NOT checked.

Hi

The first thing to try is to reset the Type tool. Right-click the Type tool in the options bar (not Tools panel) and choose Reset tool.
