Clicking on layer selects mask instead of layer

Hi there,

In the past, when I wanted to delete an adjustment layer, I could click on the layer and delete it entirely. Now, I believe starting in 21 (?), I have to press delete twice to delete the layer because clicking on the layer selects the mask instead. Having to delete the mask, then the layer ends up being very time consuming in my work. It does not at all match the way I make adjustments as a retoucher. I would love to have this go back to the way it was.

        Hello, you can target the adjustement layer if you click twice on its icon (but not too fast).

        Or if you hit CMD+2 to target the adjustement itself if the mask is targeted. Then delete will delete both the adjustement and its mask.

        @CShubert Yeah, I know - but this behavior is still an issue in the most recent version. So the issue persists. I use an older version of PS to be compatible with my Wacom and OS. But the issue will continue if I upgrade.

          Thank you @emily_cecile for your sysinfo.  You are using a very old version of Ps, it would be best if you are able to to update to 22.5.9. Let us know if your workflow returns as expected.

          Hi @CShubert, thank you for getting back to me. Here are some screen shots of my preferences. I didn't spot anything in there that was amiss. I've also included a video in which you'll see me wanting to delete the curves adjustment layer, but when I click on it to do so, it selects the mask and not the layer, leaving me to have to hit delete two times to get rid of it: https://youtu.be/kKV_hqua2ss. This is annoying beyond annoying...

            It's not just Mac, it's also Windows.

            However, I think this is the intended change, so I am using it while adjusting.

            As if you're offering items like legacy undo on your keyboard shortcut, I think it'll all work out if you add an option that allows you to erase the layer immediately like the old Photoshop when you press the backspace bar or delete, or to erase the mask first like the current Photoshop.

             

            We can adapt and use it. I'm still using it like that. But I think it would be better if you could provide me with an option.

            This has been standard behavior for a long time and it's been brought up in the forums before. Whether it's desirable behavior is another matter (probably not).

             

            When you click on an adjustment layer, the mask is always active and selected. Hence, "delete" will delete the mask. If the adjustment is active/selected, which it will be if you click it a second time, then "delete" will delete the whole layer.

             

            For my own part, I got in the habit of dragging the layer to trash instead of pressing delete. But I agree that "delete" should delete the layer, not the mask.

              Hi @emily_cecile sorry to hear that. Could you share some screenshots of your Ps workspace or a video showing your workflow so the team can see what you are seeing?

               

              Let's make sure we're in a default state and there are no stale settings somewhere:

              Does it work correctly? 

              If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back. 

               

               

              It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

              When clicking on the layer, are you sure you're not clicking on the mask icon, by accident?
