Clipboard data empty or invalid box

Anytime I am working in photoshop a box pops up and will open the smae box dozens of times. They all say "Could not import the clipboard because the clipboard data is empty or invalid" How do I make this box go away. I have updated photoshop, I have purged the clipboard. Any help would be great.

Hi @Amber5CCB, have you tried a Preferences reset yet? That is different from a version update. To reset the preferences of Photoshop manually, use the steps mentioned here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually If you still have the clipboard error after a reset, please come back to let us know, and we'll see if we can figure out what else is going on.

Okay. From Photoshop, under Help >System Info, click the copy button and paste the text in a reply to this thread and we'll take a look to see if we can figure out what's going on.

Thank you for posting the info. I know some Photoshop users have reported conflicts with the AMD Radeon Pro 570X. This is because it's an integrated video card and Photoshop prefers a dedicated GPU. You can try checking “Older GPU mode (pre 2016)” under Preferences > Technology Previews, and then close and restart Photoshop.

Also, a full uninstall/reinstall of Photoshop cleared out problems for some users. To do this, it’s recommended that you use the Adobe CC cleaner tool to remove all traces first. https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

By the way, is Photoshop working for you correctly in all other aspects of the program? The only other thing I can think of is launching Mac's Terminal to completely clear the clipboard. Is that what you used when you mentioned, “I purged the clipboard” in your post? I am a Windows user, so perhaps some other Mac OS users will be able to provide you with more guidance. Let's keep trying to find a fix through process of elimination.

I updated the OS in July. so they are all uptodate

Today I ran the Adobe Creative cloud cleaner program, then Installed a new CC package on all my computers. The window is still popping up 😞

Okay, it seems as if this might be a problem beyond Photoshop and something to do with either a third-party app or script or something else that's interfering with the clipboard function on your computer. Does copy-and-paste work normally otherwise for you in all other programs, including Photoshop?

Here is one other random test to try within Photoshop. In Preferences > General >, make sure that Use Legacy “New Document” Interface is checked. Navigate outside of Photoshop to a browser page and take a screenshot of anything, or copy an image to your clipboard. Back in Photoshop, go to File > New. The dialogue box should show "Clipboard" in the Document Type with the dimensions of whatever is on your clipboard, as in my example here:

Click OK. A blank canvas should open up. Paste whatever you copied from your clipboard into the canvas. Save the document to your desktop to delete later. Close Photoshop and relaunch. Does the pop-up error box still appear?

If that doesn't clear things out, it sounds as though this is something so specific to your system that is hard to duplicate on our end. If you still experience the error message, consider contacting Adobe tech support via chat:

yes, I had a parent who works on Macs send me these two suggestions for my Mac lab- I had all the students do it on their machines. I can't remember which one it was, but it was one of these two things that worked

1. Hold Shift while launching Photoshop, this will prompt you to “skip loading plugins”, do this and see if the error still happens. If it doesn’t, then it’s the plug-in that causing the issue. If it does, next...

Are all the Macs signed into the same “iCloud” account? If they are, then they may be sharing their clipboard.

2. Open Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff. Uncheck the “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices”

I sometimes have this problem (popup saying could not import because clipboard data is empty or invalid) when trying to paste an Illustrator element into Photoshop artwork. It seems to be because the Illustrator file is CMYK and the Photoshop file is RGB. Creating an Illustrator RGB file, copying the CMYK graphic onto it, and then from there to the RGB Photoshop file solves the problem.
