Clipping mask question!

I want to put a cloth pattern inside the letter MAMA. MAMA is an image, not a text. So if you wear a clipping mask, it's only on the outline of the letter. How can I put a pattern image in a letter like a picture?

Hi @SEOUNG29266885e0yl type your text on a layer and position your pattern above it in the layers panel. Then hold Alt and click between the layers or use the Layer panel menu to Create a Clipping Mask between the two. It clips the image to the text, and as a bonus keeps the text live so you can edit as necessary.

Photoshop does not see the word "mama" on your picture — it only sees pixels. You will need to create an object in the shape of the letters and clip to that.

It makes no difference.  You can create a clipping mask (clip layer(s) to the layer below them in the Layers Panel) regardless.  It can be text, image, or shape.  It does not matter.

Note, I have copied and moved the pattern layer, and used Free Transform (Ctrl T) to make it smaller, so that the pattern better fills the shape of the text.

This is my result. I guess I didn't understand what you said because I'm a beginner. Why does this result?

Because the word/layer is just an »outline«. 

If you want to fill it, you need to fill it.

You can even use a Group as the basis of the Clipping Group and add a second Layer for the »fill«. 

Edit: To create a Fill one can use the Magic Wand Tool, expand the Selection and create a Solid Color Layer.

It doesnt matter what the bottom layer is - whatever the shape is that is what it will clip to. Try and see.

This is what i want. I want to put a pattern image inside the white line of MAMA without touching it. I want to erase all the white lines outside of MAMA, but I don't know how to do it. The problem is that MAMA is an image, not a TEXT.

Hi @SEOUNG29266885e0yl Not quite sure that explains it but hopefully this is what you are looking for:

To achieve:

Take your two images each on a layer (Mama on bottom, Pattern on top) and hide the pattern layer.

Ctrl/Cmd click the Mama layer icon to make an initial selection of the stitched outline.

Then click the Layer Mask button to add a layer mask on the Mama image:

Next Alt/Opt click the layer mask to isolate:

Then taking your Magic Wand tool, make a selection inside the letters (hold shift to add to selection):

Then go to Select Menu>Modify>Expand 4px and hit ok. Then Fill with white.

Next Click the image layer again to exit quick mask. Deselect your selection and drag the mask on top of the pattern layer:

Finally rearrange your layers to move the stitched Mama on top:

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. I'm almost done. However, this is the result of whether it was wrong in the isolating part or the expanding part. I don't think I understood the explanation well. What should I do?

Hi @SEOUNG29266885e0yl after you make your selection, use Select Menu>Modify>Expand and set it to 4 px so there is overlap on the white outline. Then go to Edit>Fill and choose white.
