Hello there,
I've been experiencing this issue since years now but lately it has become even more frequent and annoying.
Every time Photoshop gets an update, but lately it also happens independently (might be influenced by other updates? I recently updated Premiere, for instance) it resets my color profile settings to default, which is North America general purpose or something.
It isn't a big issue to reset my settings but since there isn't any notification of it it gets just difficult to me to know WHEN it changes.
Now that is a problem since color management is very important to my work both in editing RGB images as sending CMYK outputs to print.
I constantly risk to compromise my work (it actually happened a few times) and it turns quite embarrassing to explain to the client.
Am I missing something? Some kind of setup I forgot to switch? Or it's just dumb as it looks?
Thank you!
Except in very special scenarios, the default color settings cannot do any damage.
The default policy is to "preserve embedded profiles", and then it really doesn't matter as long as there is a profile in the image. If there isn't, you get a popup.
If color management is important to you, you absolutely need to set the notification area at bottom left to show color profile. This way you know at a glance, the instant you open the file, what the profile is. That's really all you need.

My main use for color settings is to set working CMYK and working gray. But that's just for convenience, if the profile was wrong I'd catch it long before anything bad happened.
For RGB the embedded profile always overrides until I decide otherwise.

Thank you both for the quick responses.
I do have the popups showing up when something doesn't match but the point is often I download/purchase images from the web and IF happens that this image has US General Purpose setting AND my settings reset back to US General Purpose as well then I get no popups to warn me. It's quite rare but happened while I was working with an American client a two years ago.
The RGB can be an issue because I have a calibrated monitor and sometimes I scratch my head for a while trying to understand what's wrong until I go check the color profile settings and find them changed.
Probably I need more organization in my workflow but often I just rush my tasks assuming everything is alright.

I've disabled all those popups. Just take a quick look bottom left, and you're up to speed with everything you need to know.
