Question

Colourising a video frame by frame

Here's the problem. I colourise old photos using curves adjustment layers. Most images will have around 10 layers, each with a mask. Works great for photos. I wanna do it with some old black and white footage, see how that goes.

The problem is - extracting frames from a video to layers isn't really working for me, because I end up with a project with around 150 layers, each of which will have around 10 adjustment layers. It's becoming just a bit of a mess. Is there a way to extract frames from a clip but not have them treated as layers? Seems like there's a more elegant way to do it.

Sure. Use a little program called After Effects or for that matter any motion compositing program/ video color grading tool. You're wasting your time trying to do that in PS.

Here's a super-crude version of how I'm trying it now. There'd be a tone more adjustment layers per frame tho.

Paint frames in video layers in Photoshop

There is possibility to draw on video layer frame by frame. I have training video about altered video layer. (but it is in my native language, may be that can help) without distributing frames to  layers. Adobe Photoshop CC - Նկարչություն Վիդեո Շերտում (Painting on Video Layer) in Armenian - YouTube

Also you can place video layers into Video group and work on time line,

Hi in Photoshop you have to work layers but after your all can be merged in one layer but this will make your work not changeable again....Thanks

this is not quite what I mean. I want to be able to edit each frame with layer adjustments without effecting the frames that came before it. Any way of doing this?
