Complete rookie here, trying to fill lasso tool shapes with color?

Hi!

First, when I say rookie, its more than that, I am not tech savvy, in the SLIGHTEST, and this may be the third time Ive ever opened photoshop.

That being said I am in need of a little guidance.

I am trying to create shapes on an image, and then play around with different colors to see what color would look best, in what shape, etc. I wont be using the image for anything but reference, as Im hand painting the subject of the image as soon as I figure out the color scheme.

The problem is, no matter what I do, the fill bucket wont work without 'rasterizing' the image, and when I do that, the whole image changes colors. They arent basic shapes, so the rectangle tool doesnt help, and if I create an image with the line tool, it wont fill it. I did use the poly lasso tool once successfully, but then couldnt change the fill color again, and I have NO clue how I even did it in the first place. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

A lasso is not a fixed shape, it is a region of pixels you select for a task in Photoshop. Once you deselect the region defined by the lasso, you have a bunch of coloured pixels.

 

You can then either :

  • Lasso the same region again to fill it with a different color (what you're currently doing), or
  • If the area is a single color, select the area with a single click of the Magic Wand tool and use the Paint Bucket to fill it with a different color.

 

Alternatively, use Shapes instead of lassoing. Then you can click on the Shape and change the color in a single click. Which may be what you originally had in mind.

Hi first make a new layer then make a selection by lasso tool then use the bucket tool to fill color....regards

    I am running into a slight problem with it, however:

    If i want to change the color, Im not able to simply pick a new color and fill over the previous color.

    I had to lasso it all over again.

    Is there a way to simply be able to change colors on the fly, or will I, infact, just have to lasso it each time I want to try a new color?
