Content aware grayed out

Content aware is grayed out in my fill options. Photoshop CS5 Extended'. Windows 7, 64-bit. I deleted preferences and restarted PS, but still have the same resutls. Since I have become addicted to that option, I am seriously scratching my head. Any ideas on a cause and/or fix?

Charles, as much as I have used that tool, I must admit that I tried to invoke it without first selecting pixels. I needed a friend such as you to point out my error. Sometimes I amaze myself at the stupid things I can do.
