Control + key shortcuts break randomly

i will open my photoshop file, and the control + key will run fine for a random amount of time, before the control button suddenly no longer responds to keybinds in-program. the control key is not broken as it responds outside of photoshop just fine at the same time.

The "fix" has been having to close and reopen photoshop entirely. i have wiped 90% of keybinds down to the 10 i regularly use, hoping that it was me accidentally hitting a wrong keybind.
i have tried a lot of stuff, including making sure the correct tool is selected and activly in use and that i haven't accidentally selected a percentage setting or something.

This has been a problem for a WHILE for me. i also tried reinstalling the program at some point last year. I've just tolerated it because of Adhd procrastiation + asking for help avoidance. This quesion has just happened again twice today in a 15 minute span and i just decided to finally ask

i've seen others mention a similar issue but was unable to find this exact same situation. As others seem to just have NO control button response in-program. while mine seems to just *happen*

Hey, @spacedoutsoap. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out.

Please share a series of steps, or a trigger for the behavior along with the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > upload and attach here.

I'll move this to discussions for now. Ensure there are no stale preferences in your Photoshop. Go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to backup.

  • Windows 10/11: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
  • You can press Press the Windows key > Enter 'Run' > Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe
  • Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2024 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2024. old), You can restore these preferences later if needed.(https://adobe.ly/4860qM9)
  • Restart the computer. These changes will give a fresh start to Photoshop as a fresh install.
  • In Photoshop, go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Click on the Create new set button right next to the trash icon to save the current set as a preset.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks!

Sameer K
