copy/paste not working

when I copy a new image to another document, I just get a "line" to the right of the new doc. There is NO new layer showing on the layers panel. I have reset preferences and uninstalled/re-installed, but problem persists. It has made my Photoshop unusable. Any ideas?

Does copy paste work in other  applications like your browser?

Be sure, you made selection - (Use Select All - CTRL+A on source layer) before coping
