Copying gradients to another layer

Explorer ,
Jul 27, 2023 Jul 27, 2023

With the new gradient tool using a layer mask for the selections, I am running into an issue copying a gradient selection to another layer. When I go to the second layer to move the selection, the selection moves but, the gradient stays in place. Is the only way, now, to copy a gradient from one layer to the next, is to "copy merged" the gradient selection on the first layer, then paste it on the second if planning on moving it?

Also, the "controls" for the gradient seem to "die out" after a time and all bets are off for readjusting it, is this the future expected behavior??

Can you show us a screenshot of your workspace with the layers panel visible?

Make sure the gradient layer is selected, and also the gradient tool.  Unless you were using Classic gradient, the controls should then be vissible in the document window and properties panel.

Yep, That works, I forgot to have the gradient tool picked when I couldn't find the "handles" for readjusting the existing gradient.

Attached is a screenshot of the copied gradient layer with the selection moved but, the gradient is gone due to the selection's location now.

Haven't heard back on the above screenshot showing my attempt at moving a copied gradient selection on a new layer. Still need to know how to do this with new gradient tool or work around.

Still haven't heard back after sending my file showing an attempt to copy a gradient to another layer and moving it successfully due to static layer mask.

If I understand what you are trying to do correctly, if you are only moving the selection then I think this is expected behavior.  A layer mask just reveals or hides what's in the layer.

This would be a two step process: You would have to move the mask/selection first, and then double click on the layer to get back to the Gradient Fill settings to move the gradient after you've moved the mask/selection.

Let me know if I've misunderstood or if anything needs clarifying 🙂

@Brad22414184ax00 But honestly to achieve what you are hoping for (I think), I found it easiest to Rasterize the layer and then use Copy+Paste on a new layer.  This works well as long as you don't need to make changes to the gradient later down the line.

Hope that helps!

Thanks George! I think what I'm going to do is "copy merged" the gradient selection to another layer. Then turn off the "live gradient" layer to be revisited if I want to tweek the gradient based on what I'm doing the the copied selections on the other layers. I was drawing some guitar pegs and used a gradient of silvers, blacks etc. to denote the chrome finish which is why I wanted to just copy the gradient layer, as I used to normally do, for the other 5 pegs.  Again, Thanks for your input and understanding of the issue.
