Create a temple or mask from a DXF file.

Hi,

I am trying to understand how to take a DXF file (2D Shape) and make a template that i can drag and drop picture into the shape like in this video(about 3.5 mins in)  i can import my dxf into illustrator and export as psd but i don't seem to end up with an area of just the dxf like in the video.  is that a template he created?
