I am trying to make some simple word elements (such as "love", "family", etc) in a nice script, with a transparent background so that I can subsequently load the files into my photo program and add the word element to any page. I am using Photoshop CC 19.1.3
Can you point me to a tutorial? Or other answer? When I try searching on this, I am told that I should save the file as a .png. Okay, no problem. But how do I create the file with a transparent background? What layer do I type the word on? How do I make everything besides the word transparent?
In the new document with the white background layer, make a new layer in the layer palette. This is a transparant layer by default. Then remove the white background layer.
Or you can start a new document with a transparant background layer: Choose File > New. After 'Background content' choose 'Transparant' Now your new document has a transparant background layer (which is called layer 1).
Then you can type your text, this will be on a new layer. Make sure it is on top of the transparant layer.

I understand how to create a new file (which is what the video you suggested addresses). I can easily make any size canvas with a black word on a white background. What I can't do is make a black word on a transparent background. What am I missing?

Need to see a sample. You can create any word in PS on a transparent Background, unless I do not understand the question.
Once you create a transparent background it is no longer a background..it is a layer. you can call it background and lock it but it is a layer.

If you’re using Photoshop to add the wording to your images, there’s no need to convert it to a PNG, use the native PSD format.
This tutorial shows you how to add copyright information to images. Obviously you can adapt this to add any wording and typography you want.

Good luck!

My $0.02. Here is one of the ways. Animation will pause when you need to click on page icon at the bottom of the Layers panel to create a blank new layer. The next step is to click on the Background layer and holding down mouse button to drag onto trash can at the bottom of the Layers panel. The rest is to type some text.
