Creating a transparent gradient: Transparency tool not available

I'm trying to create a gradient that fades into an image, but all tutorials I've seen show an option in the gradient toolbar for a Transparency box to be checked. I have no such box. Where do I find it so that I can pull this effect off? Or is there a better/easier way to do it?

Hi, you are trying to apply the gradient on the layer mask. Use a white to black gradient on a layer mask. Black will be transparent, white opaque. It select the layer and not its layer mask to get the other options.

The Gradient tool in the recent releases of Photoshop is double duty; it now can make a Gradient Overlay layer, as well as a regular gradient. To get what the tutorial shows, click on the drop-down  that says "Gradient", and select "Classic Gradient".

Even with a Gradient Fill layer, the effect can be done. It looks like you are using a white to white gradient. Try using Foregrount to Transparent.
