Hi, I am trying to extend my background. In all the tutorials when you crop it creates a new layer. Mine does not do this, nor does it have a content aware option. How do I find this?

What version of Photoshop are you using? Content aware crop came in with CC2015.5
If you have delete cropped pixels selected the temporary preview layer appears

I have the Cloud... And no, no "delete cropped pixels" either! I will contact Adobe on Monday. Thank you for your response!

Which version do you have installed - go to Help - About Photoshop CC it will tell you. Current is 2017.0.0 Release (20161012 r53)

I create a duplicate layer and do not delete pixels. I then save the history. Next I crop the copy and save history again. Sounds redundant but it allows me to step back if I need. You can also convert to smart copy then crop.

CJWilkes makes a very good point. Creating a duplicate layer before doing any "destructive" pixel editing is a very good practice. The file size increases but with todays drives that is not normally an issue for your "master" copy. The temporary layer you see on the tutorials does not serve that purpose - it is closed when the crop is finished.
